Bringing Baby Along: The Unexpected Joy of Travelling with a Little One on Tours

ashleepkembrey

If you’re a young family or a first-time parent, the idea of traveling with a baby can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. You might find yourself filled with worry about how your little one will behave and how other travelers will react. The good news is: you can have a wonderful time exploring new places while creating lasting memories with your baby. Whether it’s a wine tour, a food experience, or even a fun pizza-making class, including your baby can lead to delightful surprises and cherished moments.

The Nerves Before the Adventure

Our first attempt to join a tour with our baby was filled with anxiety. Thoughts like “What if he cries?” or “What will others think?” raced through our minds. Initially, we were concerned that our baby might disrupt the enjoyable experience of a guided tour. However, we quickly learned that these worries were unnecessary.

In reality, many tour operators and other guests are welcoming and accommodating for families. On our first tour when Jack was just a month old, for example, everyone was very understanding, even when he cried, and loved trying to get him to smile. The tension we felt transformed into shared joy, reminding us that babies have a special way of connecting people.

A Game Plan for Success

Having a plan is crucial when traveling with a baby. We learned to prepare for various scenarios, whether it was a hungry baby needing a quick snack or a sudden diaper change. We packed essentials like:

  • Snacks and baby food

  • Favorite toys

  • A portable changing pad

  • A light blanket for comfort

Additionally, before joining any tour, we always confirmed with the operator that they welcomed children, especially since some tours may have age restrictions. Most providers appreciate families reaching out and are eager to help.

Finding the Right Tours

Choosing the right tour is super important! Sadly, not every tour is suitable for babies, so it's essential to find options that accept families (someday we can return to the hostel bar tours from our early 20s, but for now, we’re in the “Baby Beluga” phase of life). Since Jack is still little, we’re leaning towards tours where we don’t have to drive. That way, we can skip the hassle of getting on and off a bus with him and worrying about car seats.

Any type of walking tour fits into plans with a baby beautifully. There is usually guidance when booking the tour if it is stroller-friendly or if there are many steps so that you can prepare accordingly. On the tours we have joined, the guides often embraced our baby, weaving Jack into their storytelling. Jack enjoys a walk in a new destination, and we all learned something new.

Food and wine tours are another excellent choice. Sampling local dishes while meandering through the city allowed us to engage with the culture and share these experiences with Jack. With him safely nestled in his stroller, he delighted in the vibrant atmosphere and interacting with other people on the tour.

Embracing the Community

On our tours, Jack quickly became a little celebrity! People around us often lightened the mood with cheerful conversations or even offered their assistance, including the Chef of a cooking tour who took Jack under his wing. It was heartwarming to see how a baby could bring strangers closer and foster connections among fellow travelers.

Having Jack with us allowed us to meet other families who shared similar feelings of apprehension. This camaraderie made our journey more fulfilling. Travel with a baby is not just acceptable; it can enhance the overall experience for everyone involved.

Preparing for the Unexpected

No matter how well you plan, it is essential to stay flexible. Babies have their own schedules, and disruptions are inevitable. For instance, on one tour, when Jack demanded a snack break just as we arrived at The Last Supper in Milan, we took a moment to pause. We stepped away from the group, fed him in a quiet corner, and rejoined a moment later. The guide quickly filed us in on the next plan and the tour continued.

Over time, we have learned how valuable patience and adaptability can be. Some of our favorite memories have emerged from unplanned moments, where we embraced the unexpected and enjoyed the beauty of travel together.

The Joy of Exploration

Our experiences traveling with Jack have been extraordinary. The beauty of bringing a baby along is the fresh perspective they provide. Jack not only allowed us to forge deeper connections with the places we visited but also revealed more about ourselves as parents.

Embracing new experiences means accepting both the fun and challenges that come with parenting. Each tour becomes an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture while creating priceless memories with our child. Jack’s presence invariably lights up the atmosphere, drawing smiles from those around us.

As we continue our travels, we can’t help but smile at all the joy we find in sharing these adventures with Jack. We wholeheartedly encourage other young families to embark on tours while traveling. With the right preparation, a positive attitude, and lots of love, these journeys will surely become treasured stories to share for years to come.

Travel Unhindered

Do not let worries hold you back from discovering the world with your little one. From wine and food tours to cooking classes and historical walks, opportunities for exploration abound. Babies remind us of life’s simple pleasures and help us connect with others.

So gather your baby gear, pack those snacks, and set out on your adventures! You might find that taking your baby on tour opens up a world of possibilities beyond your wildest dreams. Happy travels!
